Virchow Foundation for Global Health opens nominations for the 2023 Virchow Prize for Global Health

Nominations for the prestigious prize endowed with €500,00 may be submitted from November 1, 2022, through March 31, 2023

Berlin, November 1, 2022 – The prominent and internationally recognized Virchow Prize for Global Health honors lifetime achievements towards ‘Health for All’, upholding the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations Agenda 2030. Celebrated annually in Berlin, the inaugural Prize was awarded to John N. Nkgengasong for his outstanding contributions toward strengthening global health.

“Receiving the Virchow Prize for Global Health symbolizes the spirit of global health and partnerships that continue to inspire and enable progress in global health,” states 2022 Virchow Prize laureate, John N. Nkengasong.

Nomination submissions for the 2023 Virchow Prize for Global Health are now open through March 31, 2023, at 24:00 CET. Eligible are individuals, institutions, or organizations who have made significant contributions towards strengthening global health, whether through long-standing academic, political, humanitarian, social, research and development, or economic engagement. Nominations may be submitted by any person who meets the nominations criteria and is received within the designated timeframe. Up to three candidates annually can receive the Virchow Prize for Global Health, awarded by the Virchow Foundation for Global Health.

Nomination forms can be found on the Virchow Prize website and should be sent to nominations@virchow.foundation once completed. Further information on the criteria for qualified nominators, eligibility for laureates, and the nomination process can be found at https://virchowprize.org/nominations/.

The official announcement of the Virchow Prize for Global Health laureate(s) is made on the 2nd Monday of September, occurring this upcoming year on September 11, 2023.

The Virchow Prize for Global Health was awarded for the first time in 2022 under the High Patronage of German Federal President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and is endowed with €500,000. It recognizes outstanding lifetime achievements in the field of global health that align with and uphold the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. John N. Nkengasong was honored for his long-standing commitment and contributions to improving health worldwide. His accomplishments in addressing complex global health challenges, making healthcare accessible to the world’s most vulnerable, and implementing systemic and holistic organizations to shape the global health landscape are unparalleled.
