The Origin of Thanksgiving in America

“Thanksgiving began in 1621 when Native Americans sat down with a bunch of undocumented pilgrims. They had dinner and the pilgrims never left.” – Jay Leno (American television host, comedian, and writer)

The history of Thanksgiving in America is distinctive, and from the first Thanksgiving celebrated by the Pilgrims to the present, the holiday has offered people many things. Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a federal holiday in 1863, establishing the fourth Thursday of November as the holiday every year to foster racial harmony between the North and the South. Ever since the custom has expanded to include a wide range of justifications. Between the time of Abraham Lincoln and the first Thanksgiving celebrated by the Pilgrims in October 1621, however, for over 200 years, Thanksgiving in America was given a little role.

First Thanksgiving of the Pilgrims in Plymouth

In October 1621, the Pilgrims’ commander William Bradford proclaimed a three-day celebration of thanksgiving. After enduring the dreadful winter of 1620–1621, which destroyed their population and left fewer than fifty of the original 102 Mayflower passengers alive, it was to commemorate the abundant harvest of that year.

The Wampanoag Native Americans, who lived close to Plymouth and helped teach the European settlers how to produce crops in the New World, were also honored during the feast. Squanto in particular helped the Pilgrims the most and spent his entire life residing in their encampment.

America’s 200-Year History of Thanksgiving, From 1621 to 1863

The Pilgrims and other groups of colonists held informal thanksgivings after the 1621 feast, depending on the prosperity of the crop for that year, until the 1770s when the Continental Congress proposed a national day for expressing thanks. The holiday was first declared a federal holiday by George Washington, after which it only occasionally became observed.

By the middle of the 1800s, several other states had adopted the unofficial practice of having a thanksgiving owing to an annual tradition started in New York State in 1817. Abraham Lincoln’s formal recognition of Thanksgiving Day as a national holiday in 1863, however, was the catalyst for the holiday’s eventual emergence in the United States. Since then, every president has signed an executive order declaring Thanksgiving Day to be observed annually on the fourth Thursday in November. The proclamation was made official by Congress in 1941.

Thanksgiving in America and The Turkey

The wild turkey, which is a native of northern Mexico and the eastern United States and was formerly hailed as a genuine native of North America by Benjamin Franklin, has come to represent Thanksgiving in America. Although there is no concrete proof that the bird was consumed at the Pilgrims’ first Thanksgiving, it was reportedly hunted as a staple food in Plymouth. It is unclear how it always came to be associated with the festival.

Given that it is in the male turkey’s instinct to attract and mate with females, it is larger and more colorful than the latter. The turkey’s meat is of good quality and may be prepared in a variety of ways, including deep frying, but baking is the most common. Several classic side dishes are served with the turkey throughout the holiday season, including mashed white and sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie among others.

Today’s American Thanksgiving

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which is held in New York City and is one of many held on this day each year, is the most well-known. It contains TV personalities and numerous themed floats, with Santa Claus coming in last and formally beginning the start of the Christmas season in America. As a result, Thanksgiving in America has evolved into a profound and cherished occasion for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Rosa Whitaker In a Conversation with Allison Dembeck on National Women’s Small Business Month

The U.S. Chamber membership celebrates a female leader every month as part of the Women Taking the Lead (WTTL) program, and October focused on National Women’s Small Business. Rosa Whitaker, President, and CEO of the Whitaker Group and a member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Board, in a conversation with Allison Dembeck, Vice President of Education and Labor Advocacy, Government Affairs, U.S. Chamber of Commerce shares her experiences in light of the National Women’s Small Business.

Rosa Whitaker’s response to the question of what motivated her as the founder of the Whitaker Group to concentrate on business investment in Africa was that since she has spent a significant amount of time living and working in Africa over the years, she early on recognized the region’s potential as an emerging economic hub for global aggregate demand and growth. She continued by saying that she founded The Whitaker Group to enhance business solutions and foster wealth throughout Africa. She states that she and her colleagues at The Whitaker Group have outperformed their expectations by aiding in the acquisition of billions of dollars in private sector investments throughout Africa in methods that promoted sustainable economic development and environmental protection.

“We quickly became the partner of choice for global brands as the leading investment, corporate strategy, and project development firm specializing in Africa.” – Rosa Whitaker

Sharing her experience, Rosa Whitaker stated that over the past few years, The Whitaker Group’s focus has shifted from transaction consulting and project development for major firms to their direct investments in Africa. Particularly, the group owns and runs Dominion Television, a pan-African media, and television firm that transmits 24/7 in 47 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa on Africa’s largest satellite platform, DStv. Dominion Television has successfully become Africa’s most-watched Christian Lifestyle channel on satellite television as a result of the team’s combination of passion with profession. They have done this by positioning the station as the gateway to Africa’s enormous market of more than 640 million Christians, the continent’s largest affinity group. Beyond television, Dominion TV produces multimedia content and will soon enter the e-commerce space with products tailored to its expanding clientele.

Dominion TV’s Contribution in Support of Women Leaders

The content at Dominion TV focuses on women’s empowerment, health, finance, gender equity, and entrepreneurship. The organization’s leadership is predominately made up of women, which contributes to the culture of support for women. The Whitaker Group’s President and CEO stated that the organization will shortly announce its largest assistance for female entrepreneurs in the early months of 2023.

“We are so excited about an innovative impact fund that will largely support women-owned enterprises in Africa with capital infusions which will help to close what the World Economic Forum (WEF) projected as a $42 billion funding gap for women entrepreneurs in Africa” – President and CEO of The Whitaker Group

Why Commercial Engagement with Africa Is Important

She cites growth as one of the many reasons she believes U.S. small business owners should understand the significance of doing business with Africa. Africa, she says, now has a middle class of around 350 million people, which is starting to compete with China and India. In conclusion, she thinks there are simply too many opportunities for U.S. SMEs to grow in Africa’s diversified marketplaces. This is especially true given that the demand for goods and services continues to outstrip supply in practically every sector of the continent. She believes that President Biden’s US-Africa Economic Summit in December and its subsequent actions will result in ground-breaking U.S. innovations in investment and economic policy as well as U.S. corporate ties across Africa.

In her final statement, Rosa Whitaker offers the piece of advice that has stayed with her throughout her career. Her mother had advised her to be unstoppable and to dream big, and Theodore Roosevelt’s famous quotes “dare greatly” and “critic does not count” subsequently served to further reaffirm this counsel.

Diabetes And What There Is to Know

“The crucial thing to me is being a diabetic does not stop you from doing anything.” – Theresa May

Age-related factors are important contributors to diabetes development. Once a person reaches middle age, they are typically at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. When it comes to type 1 diabetes, age is either insignificant or has no bearing. One can push themselves toward the safe zone by giving their body the nutrients one needs through a balanced diet and appropriate exercise.

Diabetes is a chronic condition brought on by either insufficient insulin production by the pancreas or inefficient insulin utilization by the body. A hormone called insulin controls blood sugar levels. Uncontrolled diabetes frequently causes hyperglycemia, also known as high blood glucose or raised blood sugar, which over time can seriously harm many different bodily systems, including the neurons and blood vessels.

Age-standardized diabetes mortality rates increased by 3% between 2000 and 2019. Diabetes-related death rates rose 13% in lower-middle-income nations.

Type 1 diabetes

Deficient insulin production is a hallmark of type 1 diabetes, formerly known as insulin-dependent, which necessitates the daily injection of insulin. Its origin and methods of prevention are unknown. Weight loss, visual abnormalities, increased urine excretion, thirst, weariness, and persistent hunger are symptoms that could appear quickly.

Type 2 diabetes

The cause of type 2 diabetes, also known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes, is the body’s inefficient utilization of insulin. This particular type of diabetes is primarily brought on by increased body weight and inactivity. Although frequently less severe, the symptoms of type 2 diabetes might be comparable to those of type 1. As a result, the condition may not be discovered until after it has developed problems. This type of diabetes was previously exclusively found in adults, but it is now increasingly common in children as well.

Gestational diabetes

Having blood glucose levels that are higher than usual yet lower than those that are indicative of diabetes is called gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes affects pregnant women. Women who have gestational diabetes are at an elevated risk of difficulties both throughout pregnancy and during delivery. In the future, type 2 diabetes is more likely to affect these mothers and possibly their children as well. In contrast to reported symptoms, the diagnosis is made during prenatal screening.

Prevention

It has been demonstrated that a few lifestyle changes can stop or delay the development of type 2 diabetes. It is advised to take the following actions to help prevent type 2 diabetes and its complications.

  • Smoking should be avoided since it raises the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
  • Obtaining and keeping a healthy body weight.
  • Staying away from sugars and saturated fats to maintain a healthy diet.

Diagnosis and Therapy

Blood glucose testing, which is not particularly expensive, can help with early diagnosis. Diabetes is treated by reducing blood glucose and other known risk factors for blood vessel damage, as well as by diet and exercise.

The following are a few cost-saving measures.

  • Regulation of blood lipids as it controls cholesterol levels.
  • Screening and treatment for diabetes-related kidney disease’s early warning signals.
  • Examination and care for retinopathy.

The Bold New Normal

“Being bold is not about being loud; it is about being vulnerable and bringing your story into the light.” – Christine Tremoulet (Digital strategist, business coach)

Image of Hillary Andoh, CEO of HSA PR

The Bold New Normal Conference which began at precisely 8:00 am with an opening prayer and song performance by Luigi Maclean was moderated by Hillary Andoh, CEO of HSA PR, and featured incredible speakers including Charles Ofori Antipem, CEO of Dext Technology Limited, Awura Abena Agyeman, CEO of Wear Ghana Ltd., Dr. Yaw Bediako, CEO of Yemaachi Biotech, Julie Asante-Dartey, Executive Director of Agri Impact, David Ofosu-Dorte, Senior Partner of AB&David Africa, and Fatoumata Doro, M.D of Vlisco Ghana.

Lily Quist, author, and founder of The Bold New Normal mentioned in her inaugural statement how she missed a full second term of school while she was in Junior Secondary School 3 when she was just about 14 or 15 years old for a variety of reasons. Prior to starting school again in the third term, she spent that time with her grandmother. She periodically had conversations with God when with her grandma and questioned whether her situation then meant her journey was over.

“Just imagine if I had not gone back that third term, we would not have been having this conference today.” – Lily Quist

She thinks the fact that she must work and study among other admirable deeds defines her life. She continued by saying that she has fought and will continue to fight.

“My life is the bold new normal.” – Lily Quist

The widely respected speakers engaged in a panel discussion as the event went on. The CEO of Yemaachi Biotech, Dr. Yaw Bediako responded when asked what actions should be performed to promote prosperity by summarizing that Africans could solve global issues as part of those actions. He continued by saying that universities do not create jobs; rather, they produce unemployed individuals who must be intentional in their attempts to address issues by creating jobs.

Image of Dr. Yemaachi Biotech during the panel discussion

Dresses, in the opinion of Awura Abena Agyeman, CEO of Wear Ghana Ltd., are products designed to cover up people’s nakedness while also serving as a means of revenue. She responded with this when asked why individuals should wear Ghana. According to the young CEO, when we wear Ghana, we serve as a constant reminder to ourselves and the rest of the world of our immense potential.

“Every product is a solution.” – Awura Abena Agyeman

The Managing Director of Vlisco Ghana gave a presentation on authenticity to start the conference’s second session. Fatoumata Doro described how she adopted the same work ethic that had helped her stand out at her previous job when she visited Dubai a few years ago. However, she claimed it did not work for her as people thought she was one of the staff members who performed the least. She explained that the purpose of this story was to draw the participants’ attention to the fact that an individual’s traits that propel them to one environment could not always succeed in another. When she thinks of authenticity, she considers the wider picture and adds that it requires courage to be authentic.

“Heroes are not heroes because the road is smooth. Heroes are heroes because they overcome challenges.” – Fatoumata Doro

The conference progressed with various presentations made to the speakers, the performing musician, and the founder of ‘The Bold New Normal’ conference. There was a lot to learn from the speakers and other relevant people including all participants. The Bold New Normal conference was held at the Zinnia Events Centre, Cantonments, Accra, on the 29th of October 2022.

Handling a Misunderstanding | Three Steps to Know

“It is dreadful what little things lead people to misunderstand each other.” – L.M. Montgomery (Canadian author)

Misunderstandings can seriously undermine any kind of connection, including friendships, marriages, and business partnerships. Every person involved in a conversation contributes to the misunderstanding as it might have been averted.

A misunderstanding happens when something is not clearly understood. There are numerous possible causes for this. Misunderstandings can happen in conversations when one or more parties do not make sure they comprehend what was spoken.

Here are some actions to take if a misunderstanding does occur, which it frequently does.

  • Find the miscommunication’s origin and fix it

You can identify the precise cause of the misunderstanding by probing further. It may have been a word, a sentence, or even just a small amount of body language. When you find it, there will be a noticeable alteration that will let you know. The atmosphere may change for the better, or the other person may smile or sigh unexpectedly. Several encouraging signs emerge.

  • Verify that agreement has been reached and the emotions have been addressed

There is frequent emotion involved when there is a miscommunication. Depending on the subject and those concerned, the level of emotion will vary. If the issue begins to light up as indicated above, it will be easier to know that an agreement has been established. Make sure you and the other party or parties are on the same page by asking questions. Be patient; it will pay off. Examine your emotions to see whether any are still present. Ask further questions about this if there are any.

  • Confirm that this understanding has been reached, then proceed

This appears to be a straightforward procedure or a repetition of the preceding phase, yet it is not. Together, the parties should affirm and acknowledge that they have a common understanding and are prepared to proceed.

Communication is much more detailed than most people realize. It is simple to believe that people have outstanding communication skills if they feel at ease speaking to others, however, there are other aspects to communication

Mastering The Art of Listening: Five Strategies to Learn

“Listening is an art that requires attention over talent, spirit over ego, and others over self.” – Dean Jackson (American songwriter)

Many people enter conversations with predetermined goals in mind, whether they want to be heard or not, and ultimately to escape the engagement. People rarely listen to those who talk to them as they do not give their full focus, interest, or heart to hearing and understanding them. This not only causes isolation within, but it also causes the other person to feel disconnected.

Giving anything your full attention is what it means to listen. There are many different ways to pay attention to anything, which implies that when attention is diverted, listening skills are compromised.

Listening as a skill

One cannot become a good listener by remaining silent and letting others speak the majority of the time. Additionally, being good at speaking and hearing what the other person has to say does not necessarily translate into being a good listener. A good listener must be patient, open-minded, responsive, non-judgmental, and refrain from filling in any blanks or assuming they fully comprehend the other person.

How to become a good listener

The art of listening can be learned in many different ways. Here are five strategies for using this important life skill in daily life.

  • Engage in eye contact

This is a very basic but frequently ignored rule of mastering the art of listening. When the speaker is talking and there is no eye contact, it gives the sense that the speaker is not taken seriously. In essence, it seems as though what they are discussing is unimportant.

  • Try not to interrupt the speaker

Talking should be avoided while someone is expressing themselves or making a point. To learn the art of listening, you must put any positive ideas on hold and give the other person the space and time they require to complete their sentence. Most of the time, people just need someone to talk to and not someone to jump in with their ideas. The intention is for them to receive attention, not for you.

  • Affirm your comprehension

Nod your head in agreement when someone is speaking to you to demonstrate your comprehension. A response can also be used to demonstrate that the speaker has your attention. Despite how insignificant it may seem, it is crucial to show some interest and understanding.

  • Without passing judgment, pay attention

Withholding criticism or other negative judgments is crucial if you want to acquire the skill of listening. As much as you can, try to be receptive. Being aware of the particular phrases, expressions, or circumstances that make you stop listening—your “turn off” triggers—also helps. You can avoid shutting off in the future with this method.

  • Pay attention to nonverbal cues

The majority of communication is nonverbal. It is vital to comprehend what the person’s body is saying to decide whether to support the speaker more, be more encouraging, or open oneself up more. For instance, it is essential to know whether their actions and words are consistent.

Self-respect is necessary for developing the ability to listen

It is important to realize that listening intently to everyone is not necessary as it can be draining. Selecting who to listen to is very acceptable. To do this, you must pay close attention to your needs and those of others while also being willing to create boundaries when necessary.

Self-respect is necessary for listening, both toward oneself and others. You do not have to be a therapist for everyone, however, you should be aware of how effective listening may make a difference in how you feel about yourself and how life works.

Suicidal Thoughts and Getting Help for Loved Ones

It might be particularly difficult to recognize when someone could be considering suicide. Some individuals will express their concerns verbally or exhibit outward indications that they are at risk. Many people make an effort to keep their suicidal thoughts and intentions hidden from others.

Anyone who notices one or more of the warning signals listed below, or merely has a suspicion that a loved one may be considering suicide, should reach out as it is difficult to know what is going on in another person’s thoughts. Given the widespread apprehensions, studies consistently show that asking someone if they are thinking about suicide would not introduce the thought if it was not already present.

Typical Red Flags

Untrained eyes may not always be able to discern a person’s intentions when they are trying to conceal their suicidal thoughts. However, there are numerous visible symptoms that someone is considering suicide, and getting aware of these signs, particularly the more subtle ones, might help someone spot a loved one who might be in danger. Suicidal behavior frequently exhibits the following warning signs:

  • Individual writes a will, donate their personal belongings, or make an effort to organize their affairs.
  • Describes feeling “stuck,” unproductive, or as if there is no reason to continue living.
  • Searches for ways to hurt oneself, like how to get a gun or get access to harmful drugs.
  • The individual does too much or too little sleep.
  • Eats excessively or too little.
  • Exhibits depressive symptoms or substantial mood fluctuations.
  • Makes angry, nervous, or hostile gestures.
  • Spends more time alone than normal and avoids everyone, even loved ones.

Some people, who may not show any symptoms and may even seem to be in good health on the outside, commit suicide on the spur of the moment or in response to a significant and unexpected stressor. Sadly, some people may go to great efforts to conceal their suicidal thoughts from loved ones or close acquaintances, even if they have been organizing their suicide attempt for weeks or months. For those left behind, these deaths can be especially devastating. It is not unusual to feel terrible remorse or like one should have known that one’s loved one was in such misery. It is crucial to keep in mind that, even if nobody is to blame for another person’s suicide, it is never shameful to seek assistance if you are experiencing overwhelming sadness or regret.

Suicidal Thoughts and Getting Help

Being aware of suicidal thoughts or actions in oneself or a loved one may be incredibly terrifying, and many people are unsure of how to react when they become aware that they or someone they know is seriously considering killing themselves. It is crucial to keep in mind that assistance is available at all times and that talking to someone about suicidal thoughts or actions can save a life. Even when the risk of death seems remote, mental health specialists advise taking immediate action in the face of suicide ideation.

It is worrisome and perplexing to notice warning indications of suicidal behavior or thoughts in a loved one or to learn that they are planning to hurt themselves shortly. However, aid is always available, and all the options, such as crisis centers, or local emergency services, that are available to people in crisis are also available to their loved ones. Reaching out to one of them could help save your loved one’s life.

After the acute crisis has passed, you might want to encourage or assist your loved one in seeking long-term mental health care.

Recovering From a Lack of Confidence and Self-Esteem

How people feel about themselves, and their talents can be impacted by low self-esteem and lack of confidence. It may also have an influence on the choices people make and the way they conduct their life. A change in self-talk may make people feel more confident and raise their self-esteem.

People may have an imbalanced picture of themselves and distrust their skills or what they have to give if they lack confidence and high self-esteem. Relationships, employment, and academic performance can all suffer from low self-esteem and lack of confidence. Without solutions, it might also be detrimental to their physical and emotional health.

Self-esteem and confidence

Belief in oneself, one’s skills, and one’s ideas are referred to as confidence. Confident people typically recognize and accept who they are as they are. However, self-esteem is a person’s perception of and feelings about their own identity and actions.

A person who has a high sense of self-esteem will think well of themselves and be aware of their favorable traits. A person who has poor self-esteem, on the other hand, could feel unworthy of anything wonderful and may not think highly of themselves. A person may be confident in a certain talent or skill yet have low self-esteem if they have a bad opinion of themself.

Indications of low confidence or low self-esteem

The following behaviors indicate low confidence and self-esteem.

Low self-esteem

When someone does not take praise well, feels inferior to their peers, and disregards their positive traits in front of others, they may have poor self-esteem.

Low confidence

Feeling unwanted, having trouble trusting others, and having self-doubt are a few symptoms of low confidence.

Causes

Low self-esteem may have early roots. A person may lack a sense of worth or inner value if they do not experience love, affection, and positive relationships during their formative years. People’s sense of self-esteem may suffer if they experience a lot of grief or hurt as children. Constant negative feedback may lower self-esteem.

Abuse, pressure to perform well or excel in particular areas, social media, stigma, or prejudice are just a few examples of the many factors that might impair confidence.

How to elevate one’s confidence and self-esteem

The following advice is beneficial for boosting confidence and self-esteem.

  • Spend time with folks who you find to be positive.
  • Develop the ability to appear confident through your speech and body language, as this can affect how others feel on the inside.
  • Take on a new challenge, meet new people, or attempt something new.
  • Practice being assertive, which may entail establishing boundaries with others.
  • Indulge in engaging and enjoyable activities.

Anxiety and depression are two mental health problems that may be linked to low self-esteem and lack of confidence. It is important to know that one’s self-esteem and confidence may increase if steps are taken to replace negative thoughts with good ones.
