Post-Loss Adjustment to Grief and Moving On

It is comprehensible that dealing with the loss of a loved one is difficult. While you miss the people you cherished and shared your lives with, this is also a good moment to take stock of the positive experiences.

Even though no one ever plans on losing a loved one, anyone who has experienced it can attest to how terrible it is. The concept of “moving on” is difficult for anyone going through such loss to understand and will be of little use.

Grief is the emotional reaction to loss, especially the loss of a person to whom you had a close attachment or affection. Grief has many different aspects, in addition to its traditional focus on the emotional reaction to loss, including cognitive, physical, behavioral, cultural, and psychological aspects. Bereavement refers to the state of loss, whereas grief is the response to that loss, even though the expressions are frequently used simultaneously.

It is normal to suffer grief after losing someone, but it is also crucial to understand that everyone grieves in their distinctive manner. It can take months or years to get over losing a loved one. A person may feel fine one day and completely broken the next, therefore, it is safe to state that healing is not a smooth phase though it is possible to get back strong.

Even though everyone’s experience of grief is unique, therapists have a reasonably clear definition of the different stages of grief. Here are several ways that experts can spot a person who has undergone a loss exhibiting indications of grief.

Phases Of Grief

There are five distinct stages of grief, according to Swiss psychiatrist Elizabeth Kubler-Ross. The five-phase grief concept aims to identify a typical grieving experience and is based on her work with patients who were towards the end of their lives.

  • Denial

Denial is the initial stage. It is challenging to fathom the loss when you first hear about it, therefore, you frequently end up feeling dumbfounded and astonished. You can withstand the loss if you get through the early phase.

  • Anger

The pain of the loss must be accepted as reality sinks in. You might feel helpless and enraged, and you might accidentally vent your rage on other people. It is critical to keep in mind that nobody is to blame and to come up with alternative grieving strategies.

  • Bargaining

In this stage, you obsess about what you could have done to stop the loss at this point. No matter what happened, you were not to blame for the loss, although you can find it difficult to acknowledge this at this point in your grieving process.

  • Depression

As you come to terms with the loss and how it has affected your life, sadness starts to set in. Crying, sleepiness or sleeping all the time, appetite loss, feeling overburdened, and solitude are all indications of depression. As long as it persists for a reasonable amount of time, this is accepted as a typical grieving process stage, unlike severe depression.

  • Acceptance

When you reach this stage of grief, you accept the truth of your loss and are ready to start the challenging yet necessary process of moving on with your life. The ability to continue living a full life and celebrate your loved one’s departure makes this phase of grief one of the most gratifying, even though it can be the hardest to deal with.

You might go through multiple of these grieving phases as you work your way toward feeling better, while not every stage is common for everyone. Different stages of grief are experienced by people at various paces. Your approach to dealing with grief may differ from that of others as it can be felt in a variety of ways, not just the way that is “expected” of you. Finding a means to move on is the most critical aspect of grieving.

Moving On After A Loss

Anyone who has a loss finds it tough to move on, and since everyone deals with losses differently, it is difficult to say how to move on. Any significant life event, such as a loss, can be quite upsetting emotionally and disrupt your routine. To assist you to advance more swiftly and accept your loss, you might take a few actions.

Grief Therapy

The deceased’s relationship to you, and your religious convictions among others are a few of the variables that affect how you grieve. Grief can take its course and pass away on its own for some people, but counseling for grieving may be necessary for others. If you have symptoms like panic attacks, a lack of self-care, difficulty finishing daily duties, and trouble sleeping, among others, you might want to think about grief counseling.

It is crucial to consult a therapist if you are experiencing intense grief and exhibit any of the aforementioned symptoms as you will get help to move through your loss, no matter how impossible moving on may seem.

Mental Health Awareness Review | What To Know

“Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of, but stigma and bias shame us all.” – Bill Clinton

It is critical to be conscious of our general well-being so that we can recognize any signs and get medical attention as needed. Many people are unaware of how to care for their mental health, even though everyone is familiar with the signs and treatments for common illnesses that impact their loved ones.

The continual attempt to lessen the stigma around mental illness and mental health issues is known as mental health awareness. Many often, people suffer in silence and have their ailments left untreated due to misconceptions regarding mental health and mental fitness.

Mental health awareness can aid in understanding the signs and symptoms, locating qualified medical assistance, and perhaps most pertinently eradicating the stigma associated with mental illness that forces so many individuals to suffer in silence.

Conditions That Call For Mental Health Education

Mental health awareness is beneficial to all persons. Depression, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety disorder, and suicidal thoughts are just a few of the disorders that require further awareness.

Even though each of these mental health issues has a unique set of symptoms, they can all affect every part of daily living. In actuality, mental health affects attitudes, sentiments, and actions. As a result, there may be severe impairments to one’s social, professional, and personal life.

Mental health issues may lead to struggling to manage symptoms and turning to inappropriate coping strategies to numb the emotional pain. Consequently, it might also lead one affected by it to be addicted to drugs. Additionally, if one mental illness is left untreated, there is a higher chance that co-occurring illnesses will appear, necessitating multiple diagnosis therapy to fully recover.

All of this information is made available through mental health awareness, allowing individuals to assess risks and locate support for any possible future disorders.

Mental Health Misconceptions

  • Only medications can help people recover from mental diseases

Counseling and therapy can be very successful therapies on their own or in combination with medicine for some mental health conditions, while medication is sometimes necessary for treatment.

  • Mental health illnesses persist forever

Unfortunately, some illnesses persist in people for the rest of their lives, while many others are treatable.

  • Mentally ill individuals are violent

Although some illnesses make people violent, not all people who have mental illnesses have that propensity. Most people receiving treatment for mental or behavioral health conditions are not violent.

Why Mental Health Awareness Is Necessary

Knowing about mental health benefits everyone. Family, friends, and coworkers can benefit from understanding mental health conditions. Below is a list of three reasons why it is important to raise awareness about mental health.

  • Helps In Recognizing Symptoms

Many people who deal with mental health issues are unaware that untreated disorders cause their problems, therefore, understanding whatever symptoms one may experience is made possible by having a good understanding of mental health. Although the symptoms of each mental health condition vary, some warning signs to watch out for include loss of appetite, suicidal thoughts, and irregular sleeping patterns, among others as the symptoms of mental health disorders can be extremely harmful to an individual’s emotional and physical well-being.

  • Continues To Break The Stigma Around Mental Health

The stigma associated with needing mental health care can be overcome most significantly by raising awareness of it. A person is not crazy if they have a mental health problem. In reality, millions of individuals around the world are impacted by mental health, therefore, to understand that mental health is simply a stage, greater education and appropriate mental health care are required. A step toward mental health rehabilitation is having support for your mental health.

  • Aids In Gaining More Resources for Behavioral Health

The availability of more resources for mental health will increase as more people become aware of the need for treatment, which is another important advantage of gaining awareness about mental health. People would not be able to recover without access to mental health services. Inpatient mental health care, behavioral health programs, and mental health facilities are a few examples of crucial mental health resources.

To understand the specifics of it and when to get help from a professional if necessary, it is however recommended to embrace mental health awareness.

Love and Sustenance

Although there are many different kinds of long-distance relationships, most research in the domains of communication and relational studies has concentrated on it, with a primary focus on relationship preservation. In certain studies on long-distance connections, the effects of separation on well-being are taken into account.

An intimate relationship between partners who are physically apart from one another is referred to as a long-distance relationship. Geographical distance and a lack of in-person touch are challenges in this kind of relationship.

There is a limited opportunity for physical interaction between people in long-distance relationships, and there is a need to make up for that lapse because of this. Constant conversation, however, fills this communication gap as the use of technology has simplified this process. The measures one can take to maintain a long-distance relationship are listed below.

  • Show genuine concern

Communication should not be confused with concern. Instead, it is one of the goals that communication is intended to achieve. People communicate for a variety of reasons, not all of which are related to concern. Some of the reasons include making a request, demanding attention, and expressing satisfaction, among others. The emotion of worry or anxiety about a certain situation that another person is going through is consequently defined as concern. One is motivated by this emotion to reach out to the other person as effectively as possible. Communication and assistance are two ways to express concern. Concern, however, deepens the emotional connection between spouses regardless of how it is expressed.
  • Surprises and presents

Like magic, surprises and gifts bring out the best in everything. This is not merely a result of peoples’ love of gifting. To convey affection and concern, it goes a little beyond. When one expresses love by giving and receiving surprises, it shows how invested they are in the relationship. The other side remains devoted and enthusiastic thanks to that one assurance.

  • At all times, be truthful

It is best to express emotions like worry, insecurity, and jealousy to other people. A long-distance relationship cannot be sustained by trying to keep things from the other person.

  • Visit each other when possible

In any long-distance relationship, visits are the high point since they allow the couple to finally be together and catch up on all the time they have missed apart. This one action forges a solid connection and is good for the relationship.

Lagos to Accra | A Story of Love and Hardship

Life requires overcoming challenges and obstacles of many types. Battling our struggles and fears determines who we are. – David Weatherford (Child psychologist)

Image of Temitope in a conversation with a staff of Dominion TV in Circle, Accra.

To love and be loved in return is one of everyone’s deepest dreams. Some people will go to great lengths, risking their safety, to visit their loved ones, even if it means traveling great distances.

Temitope Olabisi Karounwi is one of those people. She is a Nigerian woman in her 30s and a vendor on the streets of Circle, Accra. In October 2019, she left Lagos, Nigeria for Ghana after meeting a man online whom she believed to be a gift from God. Even though her story is very brief, it is nonetheless a poignant one. Their romantic journey appeared to be going well until the man in question revealed to Temitope on March 3, 2020, that his parents had counseled against their future intentions to wed. Temitope described how she attempted to hold on to him out of love for him, but all of her efforts were unsuccessful.

Temitope’s struggles in the streets of Accra

After experiencing disappointment, Temitope started her job hunt until she was hired at an eatery, where she was paid Ghc10 per day. She spoke of how difficult the struggle was yet had to make do with what she had at the time owing to the fact that she lacked the money to go back to Nigeria.

“It was not easy for me at all, but I wanted to achieve something with my life so I still saved out of the little I was making”.

She finally succeeded in purchasing a refrigerator to sell on the streets of Circle, a city in Accra-Ghana, after some time. Even though she is now seeing a man she calls her dream partner, she sells sachet water and other beverages on the streets of Accra. According to Temitope, some days are good and some days are not at all good. She continues by saying that even though she is expecting a child and her current income is not sufficient to support herself and the child, she will continue to take each day as it comes until she achieves success.

She holds that even if she has made mistakes in her life, God never criticizes her and that His plans are always ideal, therefore she hopes for the day when all of her difficulties will be over. This is the story of a woman who followed her heart, experienced disappointment, and is making a valiant effort to support herself despite her difficulties.

She counsels everyone who is having trouble creating a fulfilling life for themselves through what they do to persevere since their breakthrough is closer than they think.

Do you, as a man or woman, strive to live a meaningful life in spite of whatever challenges you may encounter? While putting a lot of effort into realizing your dreams, never lose hope. 27-year-old Shares Battle with Sickle Cell

Every individual you come across is engaged in a battle you are unaware of. Why not simply practice kindness wherever possible? Even if someone seems to have everything together, they could still be struggling with something internally. By being kind, you could potentially make someone’s day or even change their life.

Every so often, a person emerges who can legitimately be referred to as a hero. Amina Musah is a heroine of our generation because she regularly fights a battle that would break many others if they were in her position.

Sickle cell disease is a collection of genetic red blood cell abnormalities that damage hemoglobin, the protein that transports oxygen throughout the body. It is a lifelong disease. Currently, the only treatment for sickle cell disease is bone marrow and blood transplant, but there are efficient therapies that can lessen symptoms and increase lifespan. Sickle cell disease (SCD), which affects over 200,000 newborns each year in Africa, is a significant public health issue, according to research estimates. Every year, sickle cell disease is diagnosed in roughly 15,000 (2%) babies in Ghana.

Image of Amina Musah and a staff member of Dominion TV.

Experience with sickle cell

Amina Musah, 27, a native of Oblogo, Weija, who is living with sickle cell disease (SCD) experienced her first sickle cell crisis when she was just 8 years old. Her grandmother restricted her from associating with her friends, as is customary for young children, and this prevented her from enjoying her youth owing to the discomfort caused by the disease.

Amina described how her house mistress accused her of being pregnant when she went to school with her medical report after experiencing her first crisis in senior high school. She was humiliated by her schoolmates as a result of this one action. No matter how long it took, she clung to God and trusted Him to vindicate her, and in the end, He did.

When Amina had completed her senior high education and had gained admission into a Nursing Training Institute, her principal at the time advised against pursuing a career in nursing since, in his opinion, it was too demanding for someone with her condition. The courageous young woman with sickle cell persisted, and in 2017, she was finally admitted. However, the joy of working in the medical sector was short-lived for the next two years as sickle cell refused to let go of her.

The young woman remarked, “Every month once I am done menstruation, I deal with the crisis,” when asked how frequently she has crises. She mentioned how, despite the suffering caused by having sickle cell, she is confident that God has a purpose for her life and will not use her condition to humiliate her.

“Even though I am confident that God has a wonderful plan for my life, I am ready for everything that is yet to come because I have heard of people with sickle cell who have passed away at a young age.” – Amina Musah

2018’s heavenly experience at Korle-Bu

Amina was rushed to the emergency room of the Korle-Bu hospital sometime in 2018. She described how the doctors maintained her hope during her stay as she lived there for a month while using oxygen to stay alive. Amina, while sobbing uncontrollably, described how her mother contacted the hospital accountant for the total cost of the oxygen for a month. The accountant reportedly inquired whether they could pay, and after repeated attempts to get him to speak failed, he said he would pay for the oxygen, which at the time cost 7,000 cedis for a month.

“An angel in human form paid for my debt too, just as Christ came to die for you and me, and I am eternally grateful because I know God has a plan for me. My ways are not His ways” – Amina Musah

Amina’s advice is intended for all who have not yet married or given birth, and she urges everyone to check their sickling status before committing to anything because, in her experience, as a result of the intensity of pain associated with the condition, sickle cell disease is more depressing and health-depleting than is even known.

Saved by Grace | A Remarkable Journey with Tuberculosis

“The biggest disease today is not leprosy or tuberculosis, but rather the feeling of being unwanted.” – Mother Teresa

Every young man’s dream is to grow up free of any illness that threatens his life and to realize all of his dreams. Life-threatening illnesses like tuberculosis and pneumonia should not be taken lightly since those who survive them are not only grateful to God but have also learned to appreciate life and the simple things.

The primary organs affected by the potentially dangerous infectious disease tuberculosis (TB) are the lungs. People contract tuberculosis from one another by coughing and sneezing, which release microscopic droplets of bacteria-causing sputum into the air.

One such person who has seen the horrifying effects of tuberculosis, seen its ugly face, and is now free is Stephenson Ochemba. He describes the illness that, but for God’s intervention, would have killed him. His story is only one of many heartening stories that the young man uses to inspire everyone who has reached the brink of giving up to continue to hope despite all odds.

How It All Started

Stephen at the tuberculosis unit.

Stephenson Ochemba began experiencing headaches as he was preparing for ‘Greater Works’ in Accra on a specific day in July 2019. He experienced the signs of malaria, therefore he gave himself a prescription for anti-malarial medication. After a few days, the symptoms persisted and now included a cough.

Even though he was in discomfort and his temperature fluctuated, the then-22-year-old man managed to attend the “Greater Works” event on the first day. On the second day, however, he still found it difficult to make it there. He began to shiver severely on the second day, began to grit his teeth, and soon after, he passed out. First aid was provided under the direction of the event’s medical staff. He described how he only missed one day of the event, how, on the final day of the event, he awoke sweat-soaked in his bed, discovered his legs were unable to support his body, and how, upon attempting to stand, he collapsed to the ground.

When asked why he kept attending the event, he said he could not even understand it because he was so weak at the time. His sister rushed him to the first hospital after he attempted to rise but instead collapsed to the ground, where he was treated for a period even though the disease had not yet been identified. He stayed there for a week, and as the findings of many tests proved fruitless, his condition deteriorated.

Stephen’s Diagnosis of Tuberculosis

After being discharged and numerous failed attempts to get him to another hospital, he was finally admitted into a different hospital after prayers and tears were offered to the Lord. It was there he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and pneumonia. He received oxygen while he was swiftly driven to Korle-Bu in an ambulance. When they arrived at the hospital’s emergency ward, they were informed there were no beds available and were advised he should be sent home and returned every day for treatment. His sister, in tears, begged that her brother be treated on the ground. After the information had reached his family back in Nigeria, his father requested that Stephenson Ochemba be flown back to Nigeria. Shortly after his father’s call, he saw the doctor at “Greater Works” who provided first aid, and he happened to be working at the hospital. The medical practitioner quickly made arrangements for space for the young man after observing him in his condition.

“God was aware of everything I was going through because I noticed indications in various ways.” – Stephenson Ochemba

Stephen’s Emergency Ward Experience

He said, “At one point, I felt uneasy with the oxygen and removed it.”  A nurse came to their aid when his sister cried out for assistance. He then described his two-week stay in the emergency room before being transferred to the tuberculosis unit. People rushing around screaming and pleading for aid while clinging to life or death is what he saw regularly. According to Stephenson Ochemba, these encounters altered his perspective on life and taught him to value the simple things because they are all that we have.

After being transferred to the tuberculosis ward, his condition appeared to go from being just ok to worse practically right away, which caused him to experience an emotional rollercoaster where he occasionally wished he could just stop breathing and therefore feel no agony any longer. Most of the time, he offered this silent prayer at night when he was in excruciating discomfort from insomnia brought on by rib pain. Friends who visited him realized how thin he was getting day by day, and he could see from their eyes the suffering it caused them to see him in that state.

“If God Does Not Die, Why Would I…”

“Each time I felt like going to the restroom, I held myself back because of the discomfort that came with squatting as my legs could not support my body,” Stephenson Ochemba continued. When he tried to describe how his health began to improve, he broke down in tears and said, “If God does not die, why would I, the son of God, die when I have not yet fulfilled my whole purpose on earth?” He described the deaths of two other people who had been hospitalized, one to his left and the other to his right, in a trembling voice. He talked about how he witnessed them fighting for survival at night before giving up when their strength left them.

At this moment, his mother arrived in Ghana and provided all the parenting assistance she could. Her tears did not dry up, her prayers did not stop, and her faith only grew more and more. It was in no time he slowly regained his strength and was guided to walking once again. It took persistent prayer, affection from friends and family, and timely drug use to restore Stephenson Ochemba’s health.

Image of Stephen Ochemba a few months after he was discharged from Korle-Bu.

The young man’s final advice to all who are suffering from any sickness is to first and foremost trust God because what saved him was not only medication but also prayers from family and friends. He remarked there is so much hope if God’s plan for a person is not completed and advised them to have faith in God to provide for them that which He always does.

This is the remarkable story of a young man who experienced prolonged pain, held out hope in the face of despair, and ultimately experienced God’s grace and mercy.
