How To Mentally and Emotionally Support Persons Living with Cancer

“Cancer is a word, not a sentence.” – John Diamond (English Journalist)

Anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis may go through painful emotions. The news that someone has cancer may come as a shock, whether it is a friend, a loved one, or a family member. Being overburdened, depressed, furious, and bewildered are all common emotions. Simply hearing the word might paralyze one’s emotions as it is so unsettling.

Any of a broad number of illnesses known as cancer are ones in which abnormal cells form, multiply uncontrollably, have the capacity to invade healthy body tissue, and ultimately cause its destruction. It may spread to other parts of the body.

Although not every suggestion of support may be suitable for your loved one, try to follow your intuition and do what seems right to you when it comes to how to help loved ones who are dealing with cancer. Below are some recommendations.

  • Be prepared for a range of reactions and emotions

A cancer diagnosis does not necessarily spell death. Cancer therapy can be difficult, painful, and stretched out depending on the diagnosis and outlook, however, recovery is still possible. The most terrifying aspect of having cancer may be a person’s fear of the unknown.  It can be easier to be understanding and supportive when you are aware that intense emotional reactions are normal. Expected reactions could include, but are not limited to, uncertainty, loneliness, grief, fear, and rage. It is required of you to provide your assistance in these circumstances, no matter how challenging they may be.

  • Set aside any relationship misunderstanding

Misunderstandings in relationships can be difficult. Stress can bring up issues from the past and present. If these issues are not resolved, they may aggravate an already challenging circumstance. Misunderstandings of every kind can be set aside as a result. A peaceful, sympathetic, and supportive environment will support your loved one and help to keep everyone emotionally balanced.

  • Be optimistic, encouraging, and practical

Nobody appreciates a demeanor that downplays the gravity of any circumstance. Considering fighting cancer requires a tremendous amount of energy, having a positive outlook is crucial. It is very exhausting to be scared, confused, and afraid of dying, therefore, y our exuberance and encouraging words might be a crucial antidote in helping your loved one battle and heal. Every time you visit your loved one, think about putting on a projected positive and healing armor.

  • Visit only with approval, and understand when to leave

Cancer sufferers who are undergoing treatment are frequently worn out. They often do not appear their best, which may cause them to feel uncomfortable or degraded. Calling and finding out the best time to visit is advised. Keep in mind that people with cancer can get tired easily, so it may be advisable to make a few brief visits.

  • Be sure to be a source of a good laugh

Laughter has a healing effect and can lessen stress and tension related to illness. As a result, make sure to ask for recommendations for inspiring and humorous movies or television shows to watch with your loved one who has been diagnosed with cancer. Even if it lasts only a little while, laughter has the power to generate happy memories that will last a lifetime.

  • Talk about challenging topics

Depending on the circumstances, such conversations could involve making end-of-life plans while still doing your best to offer optimism. Cancer patients may need support and occasional advice when making treatment decisions, however, when you are asked, do not be hesitant to participate, but do so with discretion.

A person with cancer can greatly benefit from your love, support, and care during their journey.  Above everything, expressing concern for a loved one during a trying time can deepen your bond with them.

‘And If Your Right Hand Causes You to Stumble…’

If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.” – Matthew 5:29-30 NIV

The Bible teaches that sin is a very serious matter to God. After Adam and Eve sinned, they were expelled from the Garden of Eden and a divide was created between them and God. They were conversing with God one moment, and the next they were darting away in terror.

God made a significant sacrifice to make up for mankind’s sins and mend the broken relationship. As an atonement, God offered His own son’s death on the cross. It is, however, expected of humans to treat sin with the same severity as God did.

In Matthew 5:29–30, Jesus conveyed the lesson that people should make every effort to abstain from sin. What did He mean when He told people to have their hands cut off and eyes gouged out? Here are three interpretations of what this passage means.

  • Do Not Make Room for Sin

The call of humanity is to actively avoid sin. Although God wants to close the gaps that lead to man’s stumbles, misunderstanding and carelessness frequently provide abundant room for sin. This suggests a conscious effort to pursue holiness every day.

Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.” – Romans 13:14 NIV

Being clothed with the Lord Jesus Christ entails dwelling in Him, imitating Him, relying on His grace, and having a renewal of the mind.

  • Exercise Fear and Trembling in Salvation

Mankind is justified by faith alone—not by works—and salvation is a gift. That does not, however, absolve us of the need to continue following Jesus.

“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” – Philippians 2:12

In light of the scripture above, it is clear that even after finding redemption, man cannot simply relax. Man is required to continue to view God with respect and humility. A proven method to avoid the things that lead to sin is to work out salvation in a spirit of dread and trembling.

  • Despise Worldly Pleasures

Letting go of material desires is essential in the effort to live a holy life. It is urged that Christians hate everything that interferes with leading a righteous life. When Jesus asks to cut off the hand that causes sin and gouge out the eye that causes sin, He is urging His followers to adopt the mentality of condemning worldly desires.

How Far Does ‘Turn to Them the Other Cheek Also’ Go?

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.” – Matthew 5:38-39 NIV

Who Is God?

Both in the creation and in man’s conscience, the evidence of God’s existence is so obvious. As a result, the Bible seldom seeks to establish God’s existence; rather, it begins with the premise that He exists. The Bible does this by making God’s attributes, actions, and nature clear.

It is crucial to have a true conception of God since having a false image of God is idolatry. A decent summary of God is The Supreme Being; the Maker and King of everything that is, the Self-existent One who is perfect in power, goodness, and wisdom”. This is a nice place to start.

Considering God’s actions flow from who He is, it is impossible to understand God apart from His works. He has not changed; He is the same now as always, and will forever be. The link between God and man is created by the fact that the Son of God became the Son of Man. We can only be forgiven of our sins, made right with God, and saved for all eternity through the Son. To truly understand God, it is therefore ideal to look to Jesus.

What It Means To ‘Turn to Them the Other Cheek Also’

Although the multitude most certainly understood what Jesus meant in the context, “turn to them the other cheek also” is now interpreted in a variety of ways.

It is not implied by Matthew 5:38–39 that Jesus wants His followers to be timid and let others take advantage of them. Although some Christians hold to these interpretations, they do not correspond to the message that Jesus presented during His sermon on a hill in Northern Israel.

Jesus essentially said that it is not advisable to take revenge when someone violates another’s right to respect or dignity. There is no need to respond negatively since the Father is in charge of protecting the believer’s dignity. This demonstrates that Matthew 5:38–39’s instruction to turn the left cheek when the right is being slapped does not literally mean to do so; rather, it means to let God handle the matter. In the book of Romans, the apostle Paul made a similar statement and exhorted Christ’s disciples to live in harmony with one another rather than exact revenge on one another.

“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.” – Romans 12:18-19 NIV

The Lord’s instruction to “turn to them the other cheek also” can be better understood by comprehending the background and context of this scripture. In light of this, Christians are advised to follow the Word and let God be God.

Why Men Tell Necessary Lies and Women Wear Makeup

“Men are liars. We will lie about lying if we have to. I am an algebra liar. I figure two good lies make a positive.” – Tim Allen (American actor and comedian)

Disclaimer: This article does not advocate for men to tell lies; rather, it presents certain facts based on research.

The most important aspect of a relationship for most women is trust. Most of their relationship’s problems will vanish if women can entirely trust men. Given this, when asked what qualities they are searching for in men, the majority of women would say that honesty comes to mind first, followed by humor. The harsh reality is that men do lie occasionally, and they refer to these lies as necessary lies. Women frequently ask why men lie, yet it is what it is.

On the other hand, a lie is an assertion that is believed to be false and is often made to mislead someone. Depending on who uses them, lies may be used for several situational, functional, or psychological purposes. For the purpose of this article, however, certain lies by men are not told to deceive in the traditional sense.

According to research, men will continue to pursue women they like even after they decline their advances. They would rather put their best foot forward and return more powerful. When they understand what appeals to women, they discover that being moved by what they hear is at the top of the list. Men, as a result, do everything they can to say pleasant things—even necessary lies—to the women they already have or the women they want to keep on their side of the relationship.

It Is Safe, However, To Say Men Tell Necessary Lies Because Women Are Moved By What They Hear.

Furthermore, there are other reasons women wear makeup besides looking and feeling good, which is not as bad a motive as some may assume.

Owing to the fact that men are moved by what they see, they always desire to keep women who always appear physically attractive to themselves. As a result, men become more confident in themselves as the physical attractive nature of their women boosts their ego. Men are moved by what they see just as much as women are moved by what they hear, thus it is not sinful for men to desire attractive women.

It Is Safe, However, To Say Women Wear Makeup Because Men Are Moved By What They See.

Understanding The 5 Love Languages

“Love does not erase the past, but it makes the future different.” – Gary Chapman

Love is a wonderful thing that can result in many different sorts of relationships. Although no relationship is perfect, understanding the five different ways to communicate love may help people in all kinds of relationships.

Love language is not like any other verbal language that students study in class. The phrase describes the various ways in which people express and receive love throughout their lives. This includes romantic love, but it may also have an impact on how we choose to give and receive love in friendships and other relationships.

Everyone has a unique perspective on how to show love to people around them, and couples are no exception. To ensure that they are speaking the same language of love, they need to establish balance and harmony given their personality and styles.

Do you need assistance identifying your preferred method of communication for receiving love? The five love languages are discussed in more detail below.

THE 5 LOVE LANGUAGES

Words of Affirmation

Words of affirmation are used to show affection by praising or appreciating someone. When this is a person’s dominant love language, they value encouragement and sweet words.  By giving them praise or highlighting their accomplishments, you can brighten their day.

Quality Time

A person who uses this love language desires a complete focus. If you pay attention to them when you are with them, they will feel your affection. This entails putting down your phone, addressing the person directly, and paying attention.

Physical Touch

A person who uses physical contact as their preferred form of communication experiences love through physical affection. When their partner gives them a massage at the end of the day or holds their hand, for instance, they feel appreciated. This person just wants to be physically near to their spouse; thus, their concept of the ideal date can be cuddling on the couch.

Gifts

Gift-giving is a sign of love and affection for someone who uses and understands this love language. They value the gift itself as much as the time and effort the giver invested in it.

Acts of Service

Acts of service are kind deeds one performs for their partner to make them feel loved and valued. Among other things, some of these actions include picking up the laundry and assisting in the kitchen.

Advantages of Love Languages

Given the genius of the concept of love languages, it may be quite beneficial for both sides of a relationship to understand each other’s love languages. They can assist in the ways listed below.

  • Increases understanding

Talk about your partner’s love languages to truly grasp what they require rather than worrying about whether you are meeting their needs. Understanding how to communicate and express your love helps to prevent misunderstandings in relationships. The ability of your spouse to understand your different love languages is another advantage.

  • Enhances communication

If people know how to give and receive love, they may build healthier relationships with more communication. For instance, if a person is aware that they require words of affirmation and physical touch to feel loved, they can tell their spouse, strengthening the bond between them.

  • Strengthens the connection

Reciprocity is necessary for relationships to be fulfilling and long-lasting. That implies that there must be an exchange of both physical and emotional energy. Understanding one another’s love languages helps people decide what they need to give and what they want to receive. They are beneficial in that they offer a base from which couples can learn more about one another and themselves.

Humility In Leadership and Its Importance

“True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” – Rick Warren

It can be tempting to grow fixated on status when in a position of leadership. The best leaders, however, are unselfish and more concerned with the well-being of their team than with their titles. Leaders must focus on their workers more than they do on themselves. When a leader believes they are superior to their subordinates, there can be no leadership success. Additionally, teams or followers under the stated leadership exhibit low productivity and significant turnover.

To be a leader, however, is to motivate, encourage, and assist people in becoming their best selves while simultaneously developing their abilities and attaining their objectives. It is not a zero-sum problem. The opportunities for others to lead are strengthened rather than diminished when one individual uses their leadership abilities positively. This is due to the fact that the essence of leadership is enabling others to become successful leaders as well. Due to this, many legendary leaders have outstanding mentors who they credit with their success. As an individual starts to embrace their role as a leader, they inexorably connect with others who have already perfected the art of leadership.

It requires dedication to acquire outstanding leadership abilities. Setting objectives is essential, and perfecting a skill takes practice. To see your impact increase, you need to exercise your leadership muscles daily. More importantly, unless a person with influence guides their team in the direction of an idea’s realization, it will always remain just an idea and will not come to fruition.

What Constitutes a Good Leader

Before acting, the world’s finest leaders are all focused on a specific goal. Being strong and resilient is a result of having a purpose. Since the purpose is what keeps a person going when times are difficult, being without it makes one far more vulnerable to things with bad implications. Possessing strong leadership qualities is fantastic and entirely natural. It is advised to turn toward the motivation that drives you to accomplish so successfully.

Humility in Leadership

  • Be the change

Always keep in mind that as a leader, your team looks on you to set the bar high. By observing your work patterns, you can always make sure the team sees a high quality. The next step is to figure out how to motivate and influence your team to change through your example.

  • Consider yourself a leader, not a manager

Each member of your team ought to feel respected, empowered, and appreciated after meeting with you one-on-one. Someone who has this mindset will surely be a strong player for the team. While a manager sees his or her team as a means to an end, a leader sees each team member as equally vital.

  • Get your ego out of the way

This might be a difficult rule to abide by when confronted with a difficult decision or demanding personality. One of the most important ways for a leader to display humility is to maintain objectivity. Your team will have a lot of respect for you if they know they can rely on you to put your ego in check and make decisions that will benefit everyone on the team equally. They will not be as trusting of you, on the other hand, if they believe that you prioritize your needs over those of others. People do not want to work for a leader they cannot trust. Getting a trustworthy colleague’s perspective can be a smart method to remove your ego from the decision-making process. You will better understand the situation if you hear the viewpoint of a third party.

Your team will notice a change the moment you choose to lead with humility. You will consequently see a difference right away. Humility in leadership will benefit both your business and you personally as it helps to feel better about your team, your work, and yourself.

The Origin of Thanksgiving in America

“Thanksgiving began in 1621 when Native Americans sat down with a bunch of undocumented pilgrims. They had dinner and the pilgrims never left.” – Jay Leno (American television host, comedian, and writer)

The history of Thanksgiving in America is distinctive, and from the first Thanksgiving celebrated by the Pilgrims to the present, the holiday has offered people many things. Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a federal holiday in 1863, establishing the fourth Thursday of November as the holiday every year to foster racial harmony between the North and the South. Ever since the custom has expanded to include a wide range of justifications. Between the time of Abraham Lincoln and the first Thanksgiving celebrated by the Pilgrims in October 1621, however, for over 200 years, Thanksgiving in America was given a little role.

First Thanksgiving of the Pilgrims in Plymouth

In October 1621, the Pilgrims’ commander William Bradford proclaimed a three-day celebration of thanksgiving. After enduring the dreadful winter of 1620–1621, which destroyed their population and left fewer than fifty of the original 102 Mayflower passengers alive, it was to commemorate the abundant harvest of that year.

The Wampanoag Native Americans, who lived close to Plymouth and helped teach the European settlers how to produce crops in the New World, were also honored during the feast. Squanto in particular helped the Pilgrims the most and spent his entire life residing in their encampment.

America’s 200-Year History of Thanksgiving, From 1621 to 1863

The Pilgrims and other groups of colonists held informal thanksgivings after the 1621 feast, depending on the prosperity of the crop for that year, until the 1770s when the Continental Congress proposed a national day for expressing thanks. The holiday was first declared a federal holiday by George Washington, after which it only occasionally became observed.

By the middle of the 1800s, several other states had adopted the unofficial practice of having a thanksgiving owing to an annual tradition started in New York State in 1817. Abraham Lincoln’s formal recognition of Thanksgiving Day as a national holiday in 1863, however, was the catalyst for the holiday’s eventual emergence in the United States. Since then, every president has signed an executive order declaring Thanksgiving Day to be observed annually on the fourth Thursday in November. The proclamation was made official by Congress in 1941.

Thanksgiving in America and The Turkey

The wild turkey, which is a native of northern Mexico and the eastern United States and was formerly hailed as a genuine native of North America by Benjamin Franklin, has come to represent Thanksgiving in America. Although there is no concrete proof that the bird was consumed at the Pilgrims’ first Thanksgiving, it was reportedly hunted as a staple food in Plymouth. It is unclear how it always came to be associated with the festival.

Given that it is in the male turkey’s instinct to attract and mate with females, it is larger and more colorful than the latter. The turkey’s meat is of good quality and may be prepared in a variety of ways, including deep frying, but baking is the most common. Several classic side dishes are served with the turkey throughout the holiday season, including mashed white and sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie among others.

Today’s American Thanksgiving

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which is held in New York City and is one of many held on this day each year, is the most well-known. It contains TV personalities and numerous themed floats, with Santa Claus coming in last and formally beginning the start of the Christmas season in America. As a result, Thanksgiving in America has evolved into a profound and cherished occasion for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Rosa Whitaker In a Conversation with Allison Dembeck on National Women’s Small Business Month

The U.S. Chamber membership celebrates a female leader every month as part of the Women Taking the Lead (WTTL) program, and October focused on National Women’s Small Business. Rosa Whitaker, President, and CEO of the Whitaker Group and a member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Board, in a conversation with Allison Dembeck, Vice President of Education and Labor Advocacy, Government Affairs, U.S. Chamber of Commerce shares her experiences in light of the National Women’s Small Business.

Rosa Whitaker’s response to the question of what motivated her as the founder of the Whitaker Group to concentrate on business investment in Africa was that since she has spent a significant amount of time living and working in Africa over the years, she early on recognized the region’s potential as an emerging economic hub for global aggregate demand and growth. She continued by saying that she founded The Whitaker Group to enhance business solutions and foster wealth throughout Africa. She states that she and her colleagues at The Whitaker Group have outperformed their expectations by aiding in the acquisition of billions of dollars in private sector investments throughout Africa in methods that promoted sustainable economic development and environmental protection.

“We quickly became the partner of choice for global brands as the leading investment, corporate strategy, and project development firm specializing in Africa.” – Rosa Whitaker

Sharing her experience, Rosa Whitaker stated that over the past few years, The Whitaker Group’s focus has shifted from transaction consulting and project development for major firms to their direct investments in Africa. Particularly, the group owns and runs Dominion Television, a pan-African media, and television firm that transmits 24/7 in 47 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa on Africa’s largest satellite platform, DStv. Dominion Television has successfully become Africa’s most-watched Christian Lifestyle channel on satellite television as a result of the team’s combination of passion with profession. They have done this by positioning the station as the gateway to Africa’s enormous market of more than 640 million Christians, the continent’s largest affinity group. Beyond television, Dominion TV produces multimedia content and will soon enter the e-commerce space with products tailored to its expanding clientele.

Dominion TV’s Contribution in Support of Women Leaders

The content at Dominion TV focuses on women’s empowerment, health, finance, gender equity, and entrepreneurship. The organization’s leadership is predominately made up of women, which contributes to the culture of support for women. The Whitaker Group’s President and CEO stated that the organization will shortly announce its largest assistance for female entrepreneurs in the early months of 2023.

“We are so excited about an innovative impact fund that will largely support women-owned enterprises in Africa with capital infusions which will help to close what the World Economic Forum (WEF) projected as a $42 billion funding gap for women entrepreneurs in Africa” – President and CEO of The Whitaker Group

Why Commercial Engagement with Africa Is Important

She cites growth as one of the many reasons she believes U.S. small business owners should understand the significance of doing business with Africa. Africa, she says, now has a middle class of around 350 million people, which is starting to compete with China and India. In conclusion, she thinks there are simply too many opportunities for U.S. SMEs to grow in Africa’s diversified marketplaces. This is especially true given that the demand for goods and services continues to outstrip supply in practically every sector of the continent. She believes that President Biden’s US-Africa Economic Summit in December and its subsequent actions will result in ground-breaking U.S. innovations in investment and economic policy as well as U.S. corporate ties across Africa.

In her final statement, Rosa Whitaker offers the piece of advice that has stayed with her throughout her career. Her mother had advised her to be unstoppable and to dream big, and Theodore Roosevelt’s famous quotes “dare greatly” and “critic does not count” subsequently served to further reaffirm this counsel.

Diabetes And What There Is to Know

“The crucial thing to me is being a diabetic does not stop you from doing anything.” – Theresa May

Age-related factors are important contributors to diabetes development. Once a person reaches middle age, they are typically at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. When it comes to type 1 diabetes, age is either insignificant or has no bearing. One can push themselves toward the safe zone by giving their body the nutrients one needs through a balanced diet and appropriate exercise.

Diabetes is a chronic condition brought on by either insufficient insulin production by the pancreas or inefficient insulin utilization by the body. A hormone called insulin controls blood sugar levels. Uncontrolled diabetes frequently causes hyperglycemia, also known as high blood glucose or raised blood sugar, which over time can seriously harm many different bodily systems, including the neurons and blood vessels.

Age-standardized diabetes mortality rates increased by 3% between 2000 and 2019. Diabetes-related death rates rose 13% in lower-middle-income nations.

Type 1 diabetes

Deficient insulin production is a hallmark of type 1 diabetes, formerly known as insulin-dependent, which necessitates the daily injection of insulin. Its origin and methods of prevention are unknown. Weight loss, visual abnormalities, increased urine excretion, thirst, weariness, and persistent hunger are symptoms that could appear quickly.

Type 2 diabetes

The cause of type 2 diabetes, also known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes, is the body’s inefficient utilization of insulin. This particular type of diabetes is primarily brought on by increased body weight and inactivity. Although frequently less severe, the symptoms of type 2 diabetes might be comparable to those of type 1. As a result, the condition may not be discovered until after it has developed problems. This type of diabetes was previously exclusively found in adults, but it is now increasingly common in children as well.

Gestational diabetes

Having blood glucose levels that are higher than usual yet lower than those that are indicative of diabetes is called gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes affects pregnant women. Women who have gestational diabetes are at an elevated risk of difficulties both throughout pregnancy and during delivery. In the future, type 2 diabetes is more likely to affect these mothers and possibly their children as well. In contrast to reported symptoms, the diagnosis is made during prenatal screening.

Prevention

It has been demonstrated that a few lifestyle changes can stop or delay the development of type 2 diabetes. It is advised to take the following actions to help prevent type 2 diabetes and its complications.

  • Smoking should be avoided since it raises the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
  • Obtaining and keeping a healthy body weight.
  • Staying away from sugars and saturated fats to maintain a healthy diet.

Diagnosis and Therapy

Blood glucose testing, which is not particularly expensive, can help with early diagnosis. Diabetes is treated by reducing blood glucose and other known risk factors for blood vessel damage, as well as by diet and exercise.

The following are a few cost-saving measures.

  • Regulation of blood lipids as it controls cholesterol levels.
  • Screening and treatment for diabetes-related kidney disease’s early warning signals.
  • Examination and care for retinopathy.
